General:
Perennial herb from a rhizome; stems erect, simple or branched above, smooth below, 20-70 cm tall.

Leaves:
Alternate, lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, 5-10 cm long, sharply toothed, long-pointed, not succulent.

Flowers:
Inflorescence a terminal cyme, with glandular-stalked hairs, 2-8 cm long, the flowers borne on 1 side of the axis, greenish; petals usually absent; sepals 5, broadly-lanceolate.

Fruits:
Follicles, strongly beaked, flattened, circular, 5-6 mm wide, spreading at maturity, the base formed by the expanded hypanthium, eventually circumcissile just above the placentae; seeds spindle-shaped, covered with minute papillae, usually reddish-brown.
